How to Pack Bicycles

Bicycle transport requires proper disassembly and protection to avoid damage to the frame, wheels, and mechanisms during transit.

1Disassembly before packing

  • Remove the pedals (left: turn clockwise, right: anti-clockwise).
  • Remove the front wheel – release the quick-release lever or unscrew the axle.
  • Turn the handlebars 90° and secure with tape – this reduces the overall size.
  • Lower the saddle as far down as possible.
  • Remove lights, mirrors, and other accessories.

2Frame protection

  • Wrap the frame with bubble wrap or foam – especially tubes and welds.
  • Protect derailleurs and brakes with cardboard or foam.
  • Wrap the chain with a cloth or film – this protects other parts from grease.
  • Protect frame corners with cardboard.

3Packing the wheels

  • Deflate the tyres to about 50% – this prevents bursting with pressure changes.
  • Wrap each wheel separately in bubble wrap.
  • Place cardboard between the wheel and frame as a separator.

4Outer packaging

  • Ideally, use the original bicycle box or a specialised bike box.
  • If you do not have a box – wrap the bicycle tightly in stretch film (min. 4 layers).
  • Fill empty spaces in the box with newspaper or foam.
  • Seal the box firmly with packing tape on all flaps.
💡

Bicycle boxes can often be obtained free of charge from bike shops – just ask.
