How to send an oversized parcel abroad? How to pack it?
2019-01-10

Sending an oversized or unusually shaped parcel abroad? Find out how to pack it properly. This is very important because the safety of your shipment’s contents will depend on the packaging, and above all, whether it will be accepted by the carrier for transport.
Paczka niestandardowa co to jest?
Let us start with what a standard parcel is. Individual parameters may vary slightly depending on the criteria specified by the carrier, but most commonly a standard parcel is one that:- has an actual weight of up to 50 kg,
- posiada opakowanie o wymiarach maksymalnych:
- girth up to 300 cm – calculated using the formula: 2 x width + 2 x height + longest side
- length up to 200 cm
- width up to 100 cm
- height up to 100 cm
- has a regular, standard shape (cuboid), with no protruding parts.
Pakowanie paczki niestandardowej
There is no single, ready-made, universal recipe for packing a non-standard parcel, as much will depend on its dimensions, weight, and above all its shape. However, always follow a few key principles that will allow you to properly secure the parcel contents and be confident it will be accepted by the carrier.- Always try to pack the item being shipped in such a way that the parcel can be given a regular shape (if the item has an irregular shape but fits into a larger, regularly shaped cardboard box, use this approach).
- Choose appropriate packaging, e.g. a cardboard box – the packaging strength should match the weight of the shipment, and its size should be chosen to minimise empty spaces inside and prevent the contents from shifting.
- Remember that electronic equipment can only be shipped in its original packaging (otherwise, you bear responsibility for any potential equipment damage).
- Use a variety of available packing materials – boxes, packing tape, stretch film, edge protectors, and corner guards. To prevent the shipment contents from shifting inside the box, fill empty spaces with polystyrene, EPS granulate, foam, bubble wrap, polystyrene chips/flakes, air cushions, wood wool, packing peanuts, or simply crumpled paper. There are truly many options. And each will protect the shipment contents from potential damage.
- Carefully secure protruding parts of the shipment (wrap them tightly), as they are particularly vulnerable to damage during transport.
- Nie pozostawiaj jakichkolwiek niezabezpieczonych powierzchni.
- Use additional sturdy elements to protect edges and protruding parts of the shipment. Additional profiles and fillers will cushion potential impacts.
- Do ochrony tkanin zastosuj opakowania foliowe.
