How to prepare a large parcel for shipping – cardboard box or pallet?

If you have a large parcel to send, proper preparation and choice of packaging are key. First of all, assess the dimensions and weight of the shipment. A cardboard box works perfectly when dealing with uniform, compact items of moderate weight. However, you will not be able to pack everything into a box. If your shipment consists of items of very large dimensions, heavy weight, or complex shapes, a better option will be transport na palecie. A pallet provides stability and makes loading and unloading easier.

Preparing a parcel for shipping in a cardboard box

  1. Weigh the items. If you cannot weigh the entire package after packing, add the weight of the packaging and fillers to the weight of the items.
  2. Choose a sturdy box. Use a sturdy box, preferably made of 4- or 5-layer corrugated cardboard. Permanently bonded boxes or those with joints additionally reinforced with staples or stitching may prove helpful.
  3. Secure the contents. Fill the inside of the parcel with cushioning material such as bubble wrap or other filler to prevent items from shifting. Secure each item separately, e.g. with bubble wrap.
  4. Seal the parcel. Use strong tape to close the box. Also reinforce the edges and joints, and wrap everything in stretch film. This way, even if another poorly packed parcel leaks, your items will be protected.
  5. Measure the shipment.
  6. Book a Courier.

Preparing a shipment for pallet shipping

  1. Weigh the items. If you cannot weigh the entire shipment after packing, add the weight of the pallet and protective materials to the weight of the items.  However, it will be more precise to weigh the entire shipment on a platform scale or a scale mounted on a pallet truck.
  2. Choose a pallet. It should be suited to the size and weight of the goods. Make sure it is not damaged and has adequate load capacity.
  3. Arrange items on the pallet. Do this tightly to minimise empty spaces. Items should be placed stably and not protrude beyond the pallet outline. Place the heaviest items at the bottom and try to make each layer form an even surface, overlapping like bricks in a wall. Make sure the centre of gravity aligns with the centre of the pallet.
  4. Secure the load. Wrap everything in stretch film so that each subsequent layer overlaps part of the previous one.
  5. Measure the shipment.
  6. Book a Courier.
